Depression is something most of us experience in our lives. For some it’s short lived & goes of its own accord. For others it never seems to go away.

But can it go away? Here at Mind Body Synergy, we’re committed to empowering people to find new ways of managing, eliminating or even simply making peace with the feelings of depression so that its not quite so heavy and all consuming.

So what exactly is depression? One of our regulars defines it as…

“A lack of positive feeling. It’s a lack of happiness. It’s a feeling that life will never get better. A feeling of hopelessness. Sometimes it can be accompanied by anxiety. Having both of these feelings gang up on you is not pleasant. Or it can strike heavily with the sufferer having very little inclination to even leave the bed”.

What is your experience with depression? Is it you? Or someone you know?

Maybe you are one of those people who stays in your room & feels unable to get out of bed. Your door is always closed & apart from getting up sometimes to eat or drink, nobody would even know you’re there. Maybe you’re the other kind who can’t sleep, so you pace around the house in an attempt to burn off nervous energy. When you did actually leave the house & bumped into someone you knew, it felt like you weren’t really there. It just didn’t feel the same as it used to. You have pleasant memories of catching up with friends. But it’s no longer pleasant.

Often when a person gets depressed it is the result of a serious event in their lives, or series of serious events. But for some they just feel like it’s always been like that & either can’t pin point a start event or feel that the start event was birth. Often when asked what is wrong, will usually reply “nothing” but that is clearly not true as the look on their face suggests their best friend has just died. When pushed you might clam up or insist that “nothing is wrong”, “really it’s nothing” you say, because you don’t want to burden anyone with your troubles such as the fact that indeed your best friend has just died.

So is depression simply a mere ‘imbalance’ of chemicals in the brain? We would suggest yes and no, because there is greater, deeper understanding that is required to really understand, you see the brain is a chemistry lab, producing chemicals that create the full spectrum of possible emotions and feelings, that in turn are translated into a physical sensory experiences in the body, feelings, and interestingly enough, these chemicals are highly addictive just like many drugs. Once they have been felt once, lets say in the midst of a heightened emotional experience, event or trauma, they often get created over and over again, because we now have a memory of the event that we replay in our mind, once we play that event in our mind again and again, producing those chemicals and therefore producing those feelings and emotions again and again, it can be difficult to stop producing them. What the majority of people are unaware of is that Happiness is as much a chemical production of the brain just as is Depression, or Sadness, Joy, Anger or Contentment etc. Believe it or not, all of these emotion chemicals produced by the brain are available to be produced by everyone, but here’s the catch, it takes practice.

Our Addictive Emotions

Could we really all be addicted to our emotions?  So what is it exactly, that is telling the brain, ‘create these chemicals now’, ‘create these emotions now’?

“The brain is made up of tiny nerve cells called neurons.  These neurons have tiny branches that reach out and connect to other neurons to form a neuro net. Each place where they connect is integrated into a thought or a memory. Now the brain builds up all its concepts by the Law of Associative Memory, for example, ideas, thoughts and feelings are all constructed and interconnected in this neuro net and all have a possible relationship with one another. The concept and the feeling of love for instance is stored in this vast neuro net. But we build the concept of love from many other different ideas. Some people have love connected to disappointment, when they think about love they experience the memory of pain, sorrow, anger and even rage. Rage maybe linked to hurt, which may be linked to a specific person, which is then connected back to love. The brain doesn’t know the difference between what it sees in it’s environment and what it remembers, because the same specific neuro nets are then firing. We know physiologically that nerve cells that fire together, wire together. If you practice something over and over again those nerve cells have a long term relationship. If you get angry on a daily basis, if you get frustrated on a daily basis, if you suffer on a daily basis, if you give reasons for the victimisation in your life, you’re re-wiring and re-integrating that neuro net on a daily basis, and that neuro net now has a long term relationship with all those other nerve cells called an identity.  We also know that nerve cells that don’t fire together no longer wire together, they lose their long term relationship because every time we interrupt the thought process that produces a chemical response in the body, every time we interrupt it those nerve cells that are connected to each other start breaking their long term relationship.”

Now what if we took the leap & suggested that your state of mind is, on one level, a collection of thoughts, memories & emotions that you’ve become used to replaying over and over, sometimes consciously but mostly unconsciously. Sort of like a skill. And just like any skill, if it has been practiced repeatedly until it becomes learned so well that you don’t even have to think about doing it any more (i.e unconsciously). It just occurs naturally when circumstances and events match up with your neural networks vast array of connections, firing off signals from the long term relationship memories which kicks in the production of the emotional chemicals that you’ve become addicted to.

Of course some people won’t like where this is going. Are we suggesting that you have practiced, diligently to become as miserable as your are? No not at all. What we are suggesting is that, quite accidentally, with practice and unconscious persistence, that yes, you have mastered, let us say again, quite by accident, you have mastered the production of brain chemicals that produce unhappy feeling results, this means you are a success, you are not broken, you’re system is working perfectly as it’s meant too, you do not need fixing, and because your system is working so perfectly, as it was designed too, you actually have the facilities to create new happy brain chemicals.  These absolutely can be learned & as with all things, some will find it easier than others but with commitment and practice,  the kind it would’ve taken to learn to ride a bike or drive a car, and the more they are practiced, the depression feelings can begin to subside and for some even leave completely or maybe simply become something that is managed in a less depressing way, almost like making friends with feelings of deep sadness that no one really gets to escape because being human gives rise to the full spectrum of emotions.

At Mind Body Synergy we use Ka Huna Massage and other Emotional Re-Wiring techniques to help you open up to the possibility of changing negative emotional productions.  We consider them productions rather than a disorder because it puts you in a place of power.  You are currently producing a result that you don’t want, if you would like to produce a different result then simply being willing to learn some new skills and being committed to using them will support you in this.  There are many and finding what you enjoy to use is KEY!  If you have any questions we are more than happy to chat about your options or jump in and book a session using the buttons on our Home Page.  Faster EFT Eutaptics can be carried out as a phone or video chat session.  For Massage you can come to us or we can come to you, Granite Belt Region and Surrounds, Stanthorpe, QLD, 4380, Australia.
